Adelaide | Getting there, and then getting around

As Adelaide Australia is centrally located, travel to Adelaide is convenient and easy to arrange. Adelaide airport is an international airport. Interstate flights to Adelaide take less than an hour from Melbourne and less than three hours from Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Hobart.

If you prefer the romance of rail, take one of the last great rail journeys on the Indian Pacific, the train from Sydney to Perth stopping at Adelaide SA. You can also join The Ghan, a truly legendary train that travels from Adelaide through the desert to Alice Springs and Darwin. The Ghan train takes 2 days to cross the red ochre outback before reaching its destination. You could also take the Overlander from Melbourne to Adelaide that tours through fascinating country towns and wine regions.

Once you arrive, pick up a car rental in Adelaide and head out to the Adelaide hills. Car hire is the best way to explore the wine regions such as the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley.

Getting around the Adelaide area is quite simple. Public transport includes bus, train and tram – all with integrated ticketing. There are two free buses in Adelaide that cover most of the main cultural and tourist attractions.

Take a historic tram to Glenelg, the most popular beach in Adelaide. Pick up a public transport map of Adelaide from the Passenger Transport Information Centre or visit the Adelaide Metro website.

Taxis also operate throughout Adelaide and can be booked via the phone or web or by flagging a taxi down on the street.
